There are many choices available when one contemplates a residential move. Because of cost or other factors, many people decide to move their own belongings to their new home. When renting a truck to carry those possessions, there are many considerations to keep in mind.

Most states allow the operation of rental trucks with a regular driver's license. This provision does not apply to persons who operate rental vehicles for commercial purposes. As a general rule, it is permissible to drive a rental truck with a standard driver's license if you are moving your own possessions. However, one cannot drive any truck for hire without the appropriate driver's license classification or a commercial driver's license. Additionally, some automobile insurance policies exclude coverage for the operation of rental vehicles.

When driving a rental truck, one must remember that he or she is in fact driving a truck. That is, all traffic and equipment regulations pertaining to trucks apply. Failure to comply with those regulations may result in serious implications to the driver.

Drivers of rental trucks must obey all truck weight restrictions and all highway weigh station instructions. Required truck safety equipment must be carried, and its proper use is the responsibility of the driver. Safety flares and warning reflectors must be properly placed in the event of an accident, breakdown, or other emergency situation.
